A strong end of season finale?

After an up and down start to life in the Division One South West, the newly promoted side find themselves on the verge of securing a strong finish in the league. Beginning with a heavy 5-0 defeat, followed by a 2-0 loss to Gwalia United (formerly Cardiff City) in the cup, Bristol Rovers Women have since gathered momentum in the league and currently sit in 5th place, securing eight wins with just three losses in their debut season.

Promotion to Division One South West has been met with an incredible milestone, playing their matches at the Memorial Stadium which boasts a capacity of 12,500. This achievement is not only significant for the team but also for women’s football in general. While the title appears out of reach, a 2nd-place finish remains a real possibility for the Gas Girls, putting them in a prime position to attract top talent for next season.

Standout Players and Key Contributions

Bristol Rovers’ star striker Megan Jarvis has been in scintillating form, netting 19 goals in 19 league games. She currently sits third in the league’s Golden Boot race and has also earned five Opposition Player of the Match awards along with three Player of the Match accolades from her own team. Since joining in July 2024, her consistent goal-scoring has been instrumental in Rovers’ strong performances.

The signing of Daisy Ackerman, a versatile forward with experience at Arsenal, Bristol City, and Cheltenham, has been a major boost. She has already made an impact, earning two Opposition Player of the Match awards and two Player of the Match awards for Rovers. As the team's second-highest goalscorer, she has been a valuable addition to their attacking line.

A Big Loss and a Key Signing

One of the biggest setbacks this season was the departure of Libby Bell to Cheltenham Town, where she quickly established herself as a starter. Losing a player of her quality was a tough blow, but the Gas Girls have responded well, with others stepping up to fill the void.

Rovers’ most recent signing, Thierry-Jo Gauvain from Gwalia in January, could prove invaluable as they look to tighten up defensively. Known for her leadership, vibrant personality, and energy, her presence could provide the stability needed for a strong finish while helping to avoid a repeat of the heavy defeats suffered earlier in the season.

Key Results: Fighting Spirit Against Higher-Tier Opposition

Bristol Rovers have demonstrated their ability to compete with clubs from higher divisions, particularly in cup competitions. Their biggest highlight of the season so far arguably came in the FA Cup, where they secured a memorable 3-2 victory over Oxford United, a team competing in the Women’s National League South. This win showcased their resilience and ability to rise to the occasion.

Though they eventually bowed out of the FA Cup in the Fourth Round with a 9-0 loss to Aston Villa, the result was far from a disgrace given Villa’s presence in the Women’s Super League. Compared to last season, when they only reached the Second Round, this year’s FA Cup run marked significant progress.

Another narrow 1-0 defeat to Cheltenham Town in the County Cup, a side playing in Tier 3, further highlights Rovers’ ability to challenge strong opposition despite being a division below.

Upcoming Fixtures: Is a 2nd-Place Finish Within Reach?

With crucial matches ahead, including a massive clash against current league leaders Moneyfields on February 23rd, the Gas Girls have everything to play for in the final stretch of the campaign.

Before that, they take on Keynsham Town on February 13th, a key fixture that presents an opportunity to avenge their narrow 1-0 defeat earlier in the season. This match could be pivotal with Keynsham sitting level on points with Rovers, despite playing two more games.

Finally, their penultimate game of the season against Worthing Town is one to watch, as the Gas Girls will be eager to finish strong against a team currently three points ahead of them, albeit who have played two more games than Rovers as well.

The Club as a Whole

Originally founded in 1998 under a different name, Bristol Rovers Women have undergone several changes over the years before being officially relaunched for the 2019/20 season as an ambitious new team. Backed by strong funding and a close partnership with Bristol Rovers FC, the club is committed to development, inclusion, and competitive success, providing opportunities for female footballers of all ages.

Deeply connected to its passionate fanbase and local community, the team fosters a supportive and inspiring environment both on and off the pitch. Affectionately known as the ‘Gas Girls’, a nickname adopted in 2019 following their official affiliation with the men’s team, they proudly embrace the club’s rich history. Nevertheless, they wear a distinct kit, setting them apart while maintaining a strong identity within the Rovers family.

Can the Gas Girls push on and cement a strong debut season in Tier 4? All eyes will be on the upcoming clashes against Keynsham Town and Moneyfields which could determine their league finish. Be sure to keep your eyes peeled...
