At just 18 years old, the energetic and hardworking Welsh midfielder Keira O’Keefe is undoubtedly a big name to watch for the future. She currently balances playing at Tier 3 side Gwalia United, having made 15 appearances this season, alongside her international ambitions which see her turn out for Wales u19. Keira sat down with us to talk about her incredible journey and her ambitions for the future.
The beginning
Like so many young players, Keira’s footballing journey started so simply. Football first entered her life at a young age, largely thanks to her football mad dad who encouraged her to first kick a ball. It was at primary school, that this initial interest in football sparked into a real passion. Break and lunch times quickly became dedicated to football sessions. From here, she joined a local teams managed by her best friend’s dad, a decision which made football an undeniable part of her daily life.
Growing up in Wales meant that much of her early footballing journey was heavily supported by the Football Association of Wales (FAW). Her initial years spent in grassroots football developed her massively as a player and led to her entering a FAW performance centre program. This program provided Kiera with access to top-level coaching, incredible facilities and the opportunity to train alongside some of the most talented players in Wales – many of these that she remains friends with today. Not only did this system, improve her football, it also gave her constant exposure and was pivotal in her progressing into representing her country.
Many of these players that she grew up playing alongside still remain part of her footballing sphere. Some continue to share the pitch with her at an international level whilst she plays alongside some other familiar faces at Gwalia United with others competing in the same league or having signed for PGA clubs. Those shared beginnings underline the strength of the Welsh system and the calibre of talent that it can produce.
Midfield role
Keira’s role in the middle, a position where she looks entirely at home, is something that came about almost by accident as her dad placed her there at grassroots level. Despite having little to no say in the decision, Keira admits that it was the perfect fit for her. The constant movement, and creative nature of the midfield, as well as the responsibility that comes with this position is something that she relishes in.
Current career
Last summer marked a huge moment in her footballing career as she joined Tier 3 side Gwalia United. The huge history surrounding the club as well as their clear ambitions for the future were big selling points for the teenage wonderkid.
Initially trialling in training sessions, Kiera settled in quickly at the club in a new senior environment. Signing for the Welsh side offered her a heightened level of competition and physicality that she was looking for.
As she continues to develop at club level, some of Keira’s proudest moments have undoubtedly come from her time representing Wales at an international level. Captaining Wales at U17 level stands out as one career highlight. Being entrusted with the captain’s armband at such a young age was a hugely exciting experience and one that demonstrates her maturity despite her young age.
The armband strengthened her confidence and reinforced the belief that the coaching staff had in her abilities, helping to shape her development both on and off the pitch. Each call-up remains a privilege, and representing her country continues to be a source of immense pride.
Future ambitions
Despite having achieved so much at such a young age, Kiera has a clear ambition for the future. This season, her sights are firmly focussed on contrivuting as kuch as possible at club level - whether that be providing goals, assists, defensive work or simply performing with confidence. As a team, Gwalia United are adapting to new management, a fresh style of play and are hoping to really compete with some of the best teams in the league.
In terms of long term goals, Keira’s admits her desire to be a professional footballer. Having never imagined as a child that she her footballing journey so far would have taken her so far, there is no reason why a professional contract is out of reach for this talented and determined youngster.
From school playgrounds to international captaincy, Keira’s story is a truly impressive one. As her journey continues to be written, make sure to keep an eye on Kiera O’Keefe – the Welsh Wonderkid with the ability to go right to the very top!
