Wythenshaw FC Women have been promoted to Tier 5 after being crowned champions of the Premier Division of the North West Women’s Regional Football League. James Mulvihill’s side will be, without a doubt, a team to watch in Tier 4 as they enter the division high on confidence after securing back to back promotions. Read on for an in-depth analysis into the season that has propelled them into the National League.

Standout players

One player whose form has been crucial in her side’s promotion is forward Libby Dixon whose incredible 29 goals in 16 appearances has been instrumental in her side’s truly excellent season. She has also picked up 2 opposition player of the match awards showing the impact that she has on the pitch.

Another important player for this Wythenshawe side is Chelsea Flanagan who can both provide and create goals for her side. This league campaign has seen her shine and pick up a truly incredible 11 goals and 14 assists across 13 league games. Her goal tally from the previous season was even more impressive however as despite only playing 8 league games, she managed to score 28 goals! Not a bad tally!

Our final player to watch from Wythenshawe is Zoe Stewart. This hardworking midfielder has been so important to her side this season and somehow manages to pop up everywhere in football games. This season, she has scored 5 goals and has picked up 3 opposition player of the match awards!

League form

Their promotion campaign has certainly been one to remember for Wythenshawe as some excellent form has seen them maintain an unbeaten league record, with them claiming 18 league victories and 2 draws. This impressive tally saw them create a staggering 19 point gap between them and their closest rivals Darwen FC Women. Not only have Wythenshawe maintained an unbeaten record, they have done it in style, having a goal difference of 87 (57 more than second-placed Darwen).

As if scoring an incredible 103 league goals wasn't enough, their defence has also been truly excellent and ensured that James Mulvihull’s side has only let in 16 goals this season. Not only have Wythenshawe recorded some eye-wateringly large goal tallies this season, including a 16-0 thrashing against Bury FC Women and a 9-0 rout against Tranmere Rovers Women, they have also displayed remarkable consistency by beating second placed Darwen twice, in comfortable affairs that resulted in scorelines of 2-0 and 3-0 respectably.

If their excellent league form from this season is anything to go off, teams in the National League should be keeping an eye on Wythenshawe.

Cup form

As for a cup run, Wythenshawe enjoyed some success in the Adobe Women’s FA Cup where they breezed past the 2nd and 3rd qualifying rounds with comfortable wins of 3-0 and 7-0. This excellent run then saw them rewarded with a First Round Proper tie against Tier 4 Division One North champions Middlesbrough Women FC. Despite a good effort, they fell to a 3-0 defeat against this higher league opposition.

They failed to progress in the Manchester County cup after being drawn in the First Round against Tier 4 promotion hopefuls Cheadle Town Stingers. These difficult cup games have doubtless given Wythenshawe a taste of the step up in competition in Tier 4.

Big signings

One big signing from this club ahead of their season in the national league was mid-season signing Panther Epinoza from Macclesfield Women FC. An aggressive and quick full-back, she has been a great addition to this side and has turned out 8 times since her signing.

Another crucial signing has been Grace Osvath who previously played for Tier 4 side AFC Fylde Women. Also a mid-season signing, Osvath is a dangerous attacking midfielder who has already grabbed one goal since joining in March.

These mid-season signings have taken place as Wythenshawe now look with intent ahead of next season in Tier 4!

Club as a whole

Not only has Wythenshawe had an incredible season, they also still hold an incredible unbeaten league streak which is currently spanning over 400 days. Can this fantastic streak follow them into the National League?

The side play in a blue and white striped kit and play their home games at Selco Builders Warehouse Community Stadium. They also have shown their commitment to developing players within their club with them having both a first team and a development team.
